Rita McMahon and Karen Heidgerd are the key rehabilitators for New York City's wild birds.
Rita is a television consultant who lends her time to save local birds. Karen is the Practice Manager at Animal General. Both of these caregivers are licensed to rehabilitate wilds birds by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

During 2008, the Wild Bird Fund was actively involved in its mission to rehabilitate and return as many birds as possible to their natural habitats. We saw, on record, 921 birds, 24 mammals, and 2 reptiles. Of those, Approximately 30% of the animals seen were picked up for unknown cause of injury (broken wing, leg, etc. where a person didn't witness the incident that caused the injury). Approx. 6% of birds seen had feet tangled and mangled my string, wire, fishing line, etc. and approx. 13% of birds were baby birds with parents whereabouts unknown.
We continue to be committed to our mission to save as much wildlife as possible, and we want to thank all those volunteers who board, transport, and foster ailing animals. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.
